In 2019, the host country of World Environment Day, whose theme is air pollution, will be China

Every year, around 7 million people die prematurely due to air pollution in the world, of which about 4 million in the Asia-Pacific region. World Environment Day 2019 will call on governments, industry, societies, and citizens to come together to explore renewable energy and green technologies to improve air quality in cities and regions of the world.

The Chinese government is committed to organizing celebrations to commemorate World Environment Day in several cities in China. The main celebrations will be held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.

This statement was made at a time when ministers of the environment from around the world gathered to participate in the world’s highest environmental forum in Nairobi. Negotiations during the fourth session of the UN Assembly on Environment March 11-15 are expected to lead to action on such important issues as reducing food waste and promoting electric mobility. The statement was preceded by the publication of a review report on 20 years of monitoring air pollution in Beijing.
